Miftah vows to focus on enhancing exports, increasing growth

ISLAMABAD – Dr Miftah Ismail, Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance, Economic Affairs and Revenue, on Wednesday vowed to focus on enhancing exports and increasing economic growth.

“Endeavours would also be made for broadening of tax base,” Miftah Ismail said after assuming the responsibilities as Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance, Economic Affairs and Revenue here on Wednesday. He visited Finance Division and Federal Board of Revenue and met senior officials of the two Divisions soon after assuming the charge.

Talking to the officials, Dr Miftah said he had a firm resolve for further strengthening of economy and advancing the objective of sustainable and inclusive growth as envisioned by the PML-N leadership. He said that efforts would be particularly focused on enhancing exports and increasing economic growth. The government would also work to reduce the soaring budget deficit and build the tumbling foreign exchange reserves of the country, he added.

He called upon all concerned to work as a team towards this end. Dr Miftah will receive formal briefing about the working of various divisions of the Ministry of Finance and its sub-ordinate offices shortly. Dr Miftah Ismail has been appointed adviser to prime minister on finance, revenue and economic affairs, with the status of federal minister.

Dr Miftah Ismail earned a BS degree in Economics and Mathematics from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA, and Masters and Doctorate degrees from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in Public Finance and Political Economy in 1990. He has worked as an economist at the IMF in Washington.

He is a successful entrepreneur who, before joining politics, used to run Pakistan’s largest confectionery company. He has worked as the head of Punjab Board of Investment and Trade, the chairman of Federal Board of Investment, and briefly as chairman of the Privatization Commission. He has also served as a director of PIA and as chairman of Sui Southern Gas Company.
