PTI, PML-N in close contest for PP-20
CHAKWAL – Candidates for the by-election on Punjab Assembly constituency PP-20 accelerated their campaign as the polling date is drawing near.
The seat fell vacant after demise of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz MPA Ch Liaqat Ali Khan. The PTI and PML-N are said to be in close contest for the constituency. The PML-N has fielded Ch Haider Sultan, son of the deceased MPA, while the PTI has awarded its ticket to Raja Tariq Afzal Kallas.
Nasir Minhas, candidate of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Ya Rasulallah, is also in the run. Two other candidates, M Tufail, independent, and ANP candidate Imran Qaisar are also among the contestants.
Haider Sultan is said to be the winning candidate keeping in view the sympathy vote of late Ch Liaqat Ali Khan, his father. Raja Tariq Afzal Kallas also bounced back and got the support of various famous political personalities of the area.
Pakistan People’s Party has withdrawn its candidate, Nawab Taimur, in favour of Raja Tariq. Pakistan Awami Tehreek and the PML-Q have also announced support for the PTI candidate.
The polling will be held on January 9. Sources in the PTI disclosed that Imran Khan was expected to address a public meeting on January 4 while PML-N was also planning to bring Maryam Nawaz to neutralise Imran Khan’s visit to the constituency.
