3,327 schools without power, 135 sans buildings
LAHORE – Punjab School Education Department (SED) documents show that 3,327 schools are without electricity and 135 without any buildings.
Moreover, 6,013 playgrounds and 9,891 examination halls are needed for the government sector education system, according to data prepared on the basis of national census results.
As per the documents, the data collected by the Programme Monitoring & Implementation Unit (PMIU) on the basis of the census reflects a shocking state of affairs at state-run schools.
For the first time after the latest census was conducted, the government has utilised census data for education improvement and PMIU data to complete the task to address the issue of missing facilities in schools across the province. As per details, the government wants to minimise the missing facilities at government sector schools.
Moreover, the PMIU data reflects that 70,102 classrooms at schools are required. Also, 712 IT Labs at high and higher secondary school are needed. In addition, 36 IT labs at elementary schools and 2,715 science labs at government schools are being built. Provision of missing facilities at 4,337 schools will be made and 4048 dangerous schools buildings would be either demolished or repaired to avoid any mishap.
On the other hands, the Punjab government has released funds to provide missing facilities for the construction of additional classrooms at school.
The SED had already formed a committee to formulate ADP 2018-19 besides directing the District Education Authorities (DEAs) to prepare and submit their ADPs on the criteria of the Planning and Development Department (P&DD). Three consecutive meetings were also held in October and November with all stakeholders like MPAs, NGOs, field formations, DPIs, and others. Some of the DEAs have submitted the initial draft of the budget.
The Punjab government has allocated Rs2,000 million for the provision of missing facilities including security cover in the schools across Punjab and released Rs1,000 million under this head. The total cost of provision of the IT Labs in High and Higher Secondary Schools in Punjab was Rs 1400 million while the released amount in this account is Rs 700 million. Rs 250 million was estimated cost of provision of IT Labs in the elementary schools while Rs125m were released by the Finance department and cost of reconstruction of dilapidated school buildings was Rs 4000 million while Rs 1971 million were released.
