Police volunteer killed, two cops injured

Rawalpindi – A police volunteer was shot dead while two policemen were injured as unidentified gunmen opened firing on a police party in wee hours on Thursday in Dhoke Hassu area of the city.

The police registered a case against three assailants at Police Station Ratta Amral on application of head constable Faisal.

However, the police have not traced the culprits so far despite obtaining CCTV footage of the incident.

According to the FIR, Faisal narrated that he along with constables Makhdoom Hussain Shah, Sajid Imran and Police Qaumi Razakar Shamsher Gill were on security duty at a police picket opposite Government New Islamia School on Carriage Factory Road when they signalled three persons riding a motorcycle to stop for checking. In the meanwhile, he added, one of the three persons whipped out his pistol and started indiscriminate firing on police party. The assailants managed to flee after committing the crime.

Consequently, the FIR stated, Shamsher Gill, Sajid Imran and Makhdoom Hussain sustained bullet injuries. Faisal added that he with the help of the locals shifted the injured to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in a private car for treatment where Shamsher succumbed to his injuries.

A murder case was registered against the unidentified culprits and investigation was begun, sources said.

According to initial post-mortem report, Shamsher sustained a bullet injury into his chest that led to his death. However, condition of two other cops is out of danger as bullets pierced into their knees and feet, a doctor told The Nation. The doctors have handed over the body of the PQR to family for burial after carrying out autopsy.

When contacted, a senior police officer said that a team of Homicide Investigation Unit (HIU) investigators had visited the crime scene and collected evidences. He said that the investigators also questioned some eyewitnesses besides obtaining CCTV footages from cameras to identify the fleeing culprits.

On the other hand, CPO Israr Abbasi constituted special teams for tracing out the culprits involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, Rawat police found a dead body from a private housing scheme. The police said that the deceased was identified as Rizwan Ahmed, sepoy of Pakistan Army.
