LAHORE – Police and Excise department are all set to maintain law and order and curb illegal sale of liquor on New Year night.

Reportedly, bookings at brothels and luxury hotels are on, the elite have arranged dance parties at farmhouses, mostly in the suburbs of the provincial metropolis.

Leading restaurants, located in Gulberg and Defence, have planned parties on the eve.

Hotels’ management believes that cold is unlikely to affect their businesses as they were receiving more orders from the customers.

The Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control authorities have constituted four special squads to curb the crime of sale of liquor.

A notification issued by Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO) Ch Muzaffar Qayyum Saturday directed his squads to perform special duty and keep strict watch on the sale of liquor.

Also, Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Amin Wains approved security plan with massive deployment on roads.

He okayed the plan while presiding over a meeting of field officers at Police Lines Qilla Gujjar Singh. DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf, all divisional SPs and other officers were also present.

A police spokesman said that foolproof security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order.

A total of 12,000 police would perform security duties, the spokesman said.

The city police chief also directed the divisional SPs to ensure effective system of patrolling and lawmen will take strict action against troublemakers.

The CCPO directed his team to take action against the persons involved in aerial firing and one-wheeling.

He directed the chief traffic officer to make special arrangements for smooth flow and additional traffic wardens would be deployed on important roads.

The meeting was informed, more than 12,000 officials including 6 SPs, 35 DSPs, 83 SHOs, and 174 upper subordinates would perform security duties. The police would strictly maintain law and order and nobody would be allowed to disturb peace, the spokesman said.

City traffic police have already released the traffic management plan for the New Year night in Lahore.

Acting Chief Traffic Officer Sardar Asif said that his team made a comprehensive traffic plan for New Year night . According to the plan, traffic wardens will not only take action against the violators but also they would keep an eye on the activities of miscreants.

All SPs, DSPs and circle officers will give briefings to all traffic wardens about their duties on their points. Similarly, holidays of all officers have been cancelled and traffic wardens will be deployed in two shifts.

One wheeling and eve-teasing will not be tolerated. Special traffic squads are constituted  to crack down against one wheeling.

Like previous years, the elite have planned parties at the farmhouses on Raiwind Road, Canal Road, Barki, Bedian and Defense roads. A great number of rest houses located in Gulberg and Defense Housing Authority are in fact operating as brothels, police sources said.

Some of such hotels assured  their clients that no police action would be taken against them, source said adding that they greased the palms of police .

The police would raid the party only if the officials concerned are ‘not paid their due share’, a party-organiser said.
