Anti-encounter protest turns violent
Karachi – Following the alleged encounter of Naqeebullah Mehsud, political, social activists including civil society members and human rights organisations on Friday evening held a protest demonstration at Sohrab Goth.
A large number of people including workers of Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by PTI Sindh president Arif Alvi, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Imran Ismail, Firdous Shamim Naqvi, and other, besides civil society members, and Jamaat e Islami leaders and workers reached the Superhighway and staged a sit-in against alleged extra-judicial murder of Naqeeb Mahsood by SSP Malir Rao Anwar.
The protesters chanted slogans against Rao Anwar and demanded to sack him. However, due to the protest, all sorts of traffic came to standstill on the Superhighway. Following the protest demonstration and blockage of Superhighway, heavy contingent of police and para military force Rangers reached the demo site and fired teargas shell to break up the protest.
Situation turned violent after police action against the protesters and clashes erupted between law enforcement agencies and demonstrators, causing injuries to several protesters. The protest was later called off in night after announcements from loud speakers.
Earlier, speaking at the demo site, PTI Arif Alvi charged that Rao Anwar had also killed many other men in past in Karachi after arresting them. Judicial inquiry should be conducted against him, he demanded. He said that they did not believe in Sindh police’s inquiry committee.
Haleem Adil Shaikh said that they have video clipping of Ibrahim Hyderi school incident but Rao Anwar presented the incident in a wrong colour. He demanded to dole out justice to victim’s family as soon as possible.
