Opposition stages walkout over ‘un-elected’ Miftah presenting budget

Opposition parties Friday staged a walkout in the National Assembly on Khursheed Shah’s call after he criticised the government for allowing an “un-elected official” to present the fiscal budget.

“By allowing an un-elected official to present the budget, the government is setting a wrong precedent,” Shah said at the budget session.

Responding to the opposition’s criticism, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said it was the government’s constitutional duty to present the budget for smooth running of the country’s affairs.

“As per the cabinet’s decision, (Finance Minister) Miftah Ismail will present the budget in assembly today. There is nothing unconstitutional and it is in accordance with the constitution,” he added.
