Punjab to unveil Rs 2.6 trillion budget today

LAHORE – With an overall outlay of over Rs 2.6 trillion, Punjab Finance Minister Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht will present the provincial budget for the financial year 2021-22 in the provincial assembly today.

The finance minister on Sunday said that the new Punjab budget would be people-friendly, and it would also facilitate the business community. “A special package for industrialists will be announced in the budget in addition to several welfare projects for the people,” he added.

“The Punjab’s budget will have good news for farmers, labourers and government employees. It includes development programs for all backward districts including South Punjab according to the needs of the people,” he said in a statement.

Jawan Bakht said that the forthcoming budget would ensure economic progress with record allocation of funds for development projects, adding that it would ensure health insurance for 100pc of the province by December 2021.

“The budget includes training and business opportunities for the youth, housing schemes for the underprivileged and homeless people and mega projects of clean drinking water and commercial infrastructure for Lahore. Excellent communication projects will boost economic activities and ease mobility in the province,” he observed.

Punjab Finance Minister says record funds for development, social sector allocated

The minister further stated that provision of missing facilities in tehsil and district hospitals, mother and child healthcare hospitals and a cardiac hospital for children would be announced in the budget. He said that the Punjab government was ensuring the establishment of at least one university in every district of Punjab. “In this context, funds have been allocated in the budget for building universities in different districts,” he added.

Bakht said that the upgradation of primary schools in Punjab up to elementary level would encourage middle level education among children in backward areas, adding that funds would be allocated for upgradation of schools.

“In the budget, funds for the development of social sector will be increased. The budget will ensure a significant increase in employment opportunities for labourers,” he said.

Special cabinet meeting to approve budgetary proposals

Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar will preside over a special meeting of the provincial cabinet on June 14 (today) to grant approval to the new budgetary proposals for the fiscal year 2021-22.

The meeting will also approve the supplementary budget for the financial year 2020-21. The cabinet will also approve the revised budget estimates for the financial year 2020-21. Provincial ministers, advisors, special assistants, chief secretaries and secretaries of relevant departments will attend the meeting.
