Rs 100m food, other items to be provided to Afghan people: Governor
LAHORE – Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar has announced to dispatch relief goods worth Rs 100 millionto Afghanistan.
The relief goods include food and daily use items which are being dispatched in collaboration with ‘Group Friends of Lahore’ and other welfare organizations. Addressing a press conference, the governor said that the people of Afghanistan were currently facing many difficulties in terms of health and availability of food. He stressed that it was the moral responsibility of the entire world to go beyond political and personal interests and provide assistance to the Afghan people. Ch Sarwar urged the philanthropists across Pakistan to deposit as many donations as possible in the account of Bait-ul-Salam so as to support the Afghan people in this hour of need.
Moreover, the governor also announced that the University of Management and Technology (UMT) will offer scholarships to 100 Afghan students and the University of Health Sciences will provide online training to Afghan doctors in various health sectors including the Coronavirus. Maulana Abdul Sattar of Bait-ul-Salam, Vice-Chancellor of University of Health Sciences, Dr Javed Akram, Group Friends of Lahore’s Mian Ahsan, Ibrahim Murad, Anwar A Khan, SM Pervaiz were present on the occasion.
The governor said that peace in Afghanistan will benefit not only Pakistan and the region but the whole world. “The establishment of peace in Afghanistan, strengthening the economy and providing basic amenities to the people is essential. Pakistan’s policy regarding Afghanistan is clear. We neither want a government of our choice nor to interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan”, he maintained. In response to a question, Ch Sarwar said that if a single person in Afghanistan commited a hate crime, the whole Afghan nation could not be held responsible. “There are people who are against peaceful bilateral relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan but we have to foil the plan of such people through our actions by standing with our Afghan brothers and sisters in the time of crisis”, he averred.
The governor further stated: “We are helping the Afghan people with the support of the Pak-Afghan Brotherhood, Sarwar Foundation, University of Lahore, Qarshi Foundation, Ghani Group and Vital Group. The spirit with which the philanthropists in Pakistan unite and work for the service of humanity in difficult times is unparalleled in the world”. He said Pakistan provideded full support to the Palestinian people in heath and other sectors and will not leave the Afghan people alone in this difficult time. Maulana Abdul Sattar of the welfare organization Bait-ul-Salam, while talking on the occasion, said: “We also worked for the service of humanity under the leadership of Governor Punjab during the Coronavirus crisis and, today, we are again united for the provision of rations and other aid to the people of Afghanistan.
“We will continue this service of humanity without any vested interests” Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Javed Akram said that as per the direction of Governor Punjab and Chancellor of University of Health Sciences Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, training of Afghan doctors in telemedicine and other medical fields has been started. “We will also visit Afghanistan under the leadership of Governor Punjab”, he said.
