ISLAMABAD - Inflation measured through the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) recorded increase of 0.52 per cent during the week ended on March 10 despite the fact that Prime Minister announced relief package recently.
SPI-based inflation recorded an increase of 0.52 per cent during the week ended on March 10, according to the latest data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) released on Friday. The SPI was recorded at 171.41 points during the week ended March 10, 2022 against 170.53 points during the week ended on March 3.
Weekly inflation has not reduced despite the fact that Prime Minister Imran Khan had reduced oil prices to control the inflation rate. Under the relief package, the government had reduced the petrol and diesel prices by Rs10 per litre despite massive increase in oil prices in the international market. Prime Minister had also announced to cut the electricity price by Rs5 per unit in order to provide some kind of relief to the masses, who are already facing higher inflation rate in the country. However, SPI based inflation is still showing an increase.
The year on year trend, according to the PBS data, recorded increase of 16.49 percent. The prices of following items increased: tomatoes (169.79 per cent), LPG (74.78 per cent), garlic (62.44 per cent), mustard oil (56.77 per cent), vegetable ghee 1kg (46.83 per cent), cooking oil 5 litre (46.00 per cent), vegetable ghee 2.5kg (43.69 per cent), washing soap (38.87 per cent), pulse masoor (35.73 per cent), petrol (33.42 per cent), beef (25.50 per cent) and diesel (23.75 per cent), while major decrease was observed in the prices of chillies powdered (36.30 per cent), pulse moong (30.52 per cent), eggs (18.59 per cent), sugar (10.42 percent) and potatoes (7.32 percent). The Sensitive Price Indicator for the lowest consumption group up to Rs17,732 witnessed 0.48 percent increase and went up from 178.10 points in last week to 178.95 points during the week under review. Meanwhile, the SPI for the consumption groups from Rs17,732-22,888; Rs22,889-29,517; Rs29,518-44,175 and above Rs44,175 increased by 0.53 percent, 0.55 percent and 0.57 and 0.49 percent respectively. During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 20 items increased, 9 items decreased and 22 items remained stable, said the PBS in weekly SPI data.
The commodities, which recorded increase in their average prices, included onions (10.86 per cent), chicken (8.75 per cent), bananas (4.49 per cent), potatoes (2.38 per cent), mustard oil (2.33 per cent), vegetable ghee 1kg (1.96 per cent); washing soap (1.40 per cent) and energy saver (1.32 per cent).
The commodities which recorded decrease in their prices during the period under review included tomatoes (15.57 per cent), garlic (3.94 per cent), eggs (1.22 per cent), gur (0.98 per cent), sugar (0.73 per cent), pulse Mash (0.64 per cent), pulse Moong (0.39 per cent), LPG (0.24 per cent) and wheat flour (0.22 per cent).
The commodities which prices remained unchanged during the period included rice IRRI-6/9 (Sindh/Punjab), bread plain (small size), curd (Dahi) loose, salt powdered (National/Shan) 800gm pack, chilies powder National 200gm packet, cooked beef at average hotel, cigarettes Capstan 20’S packet and others.
