Students, parents demand Peshawar University staff to end strike

Peshawar - While some departments are working as per routine at the University of Peshawar campus, several others have stopped classes as a protest in favour of their demands while students have demanded the protesting employees to call of strike and save their time from being wasted.

Also, the UoP administration has convened its 440th Syndicate meeting on April 15 to discuss and resolve various issues.

However, the administration also asked the protesting employees to call off their strike because the (managerial) staff attendance is required for convening syndicate meeting and resolving other issues that cause the deadlock.

On the other hand, students and their parents are worried about the protest of the faculty and other employees at the university as their precious time is being wasted.

Students from several departments told The Nation that the Peshawar University Teachers Association and other employees associations should end their protest and resume classes as their precious time is getting wasted due to the classes’ boycott by teachers.

A spokesman for the university said that pursuant to the instructions issued by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Idrees in a meeting with protesting employees and committee members, the university administration has scheduled the 440th meeting of the syndicate on April 15, 2022, to seek the amicable resolution for issues faced by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university.

It is pertinent to mention that the committee constituted in the light of the instructions issued by the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education, Professional Training, National Heritage, and Culture in its meeting held on 15th March 2022 concluded its recommendations/report upon the issues raised in protest by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university. While the committee is earnestly working to conclude its report, further meetings are also scheduled for discussing the workload policy for the teaching staff. Meanwhile, VC Prof Dr Muhammad Idrees told journalists that the University of Peshawar was fully committed to resolving employees’ issues and would take all steps in its powers to facilitate them. However, he said the university urged its employees to ensure that the academic and other official activities of academic/administrative units as per routine.

UoP departments asked to end strike and save students’ time: VC says managerial staff attendance required for finalising salaries

“It would be very difficult to arrange and conduct high level meetings for the resolution of issues and problems face by the teaching and non-teaching staff without the support of managerial staff, as they are currently also the part of the protest. Also, the administration receives complaints from the students and parents via its official portal, phones and social network because of boycott from the classes by staff,” he added.

He said the staff might face problem in receiving salaries this month as their presence is required to send monthly salaries to the employees. He asked the staff to attend offices so that syndicate meeting can be held smoothly to solve problems of the staff and also to send salaries of the employees.
