LAHORE - Wheat will be procured from farmers at the rate of Rs2,200 per maund, said official sources. The Punjab cabinet has set a target of purchasing 3.5 million metric tonnes of wheat, and, the wheat procurement target will be increased if needed. Effective steps will also be put in place to stop illegal transportation of wheat, and, in connection with wheat procurement drive, an eight-member committee has been formed at the provincial level.

Special monitoring committees will supervise the procurement process at provincial, divisional, district, tehsil and centre level. Rights of farmers are vowed to be protected.
