Peshawar - The Governor House, doors of which remained shut for public under Shah Farman as governor in recent years, is likely to witness some degree of cultural and political activities from now onwards as Farman formally sent his resignation to the president of Pakistan on Monday.
The office of governor also has a technical issue with regard to elections because someone who takes charge as governor cannot contest elections for the next two years since leaving the office. Hence, those interested in active politics often avoid taking up governor’s office, particularly in the prevailing situation when the government’s tenure and next elections are not decided. Even if a politician is appointed governor for a few months and then elections are announced, he would not be able to contest the elections then.
As regards Shah Farman, he stayed in the Governor House for more than three years. However, neither was the House turned into a university or library as had earlier been claimed by the PTI leadership, nor were there any social or other gatherings in the premises. Before Farman’s governorship, the Governor House often witnessed functions and meetings.
An educationist from the native constituency of Shah Farman told The Nation that he along with his area elders tried to meet Shah Farman to discuss with him problems faced by the area residents, ie the governor’s electorate. However, he said that Farman never gave them time to listen to their issues for resolution.

Even journalists would sometimes need comments of Shah Farman being governor for their news reports. However, the outgoing governor used to avoid responding to journalists as well and he only communicated with a few journalists whom he had made like his handpicked friends. The Governor’s House under him was limited to only oath-taking activities or signing of bills and acts or summoning and adjourning of the KP Assembly sessions.
Shah Farman had graduated from the Islamia College and Khyber Law College. He performed as 32nd governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and he had assumed charge in September 2018. Elected as MPA from PK-10 in the 2013 general elections and then from PK-71 in the 2018 polls, Farman also served as minister for information and minister for public health engineering during the provincial government, then led by Pervez Khattak as chief minister.
It merits a mention here that Farman had no option but to resign after the de-seating of his leader Imran Khan, although he tried to gain political mileage by announcing that that he was leaving the governor office because he would not like to give protocol to Shahbaz Sharif as the Prime Minister.
