LAHORE - Downpour and windstorm have turned the city weather pleasant and brought the mercury down considerably.
Rain caused disruption of electricity in parts of Lahore as more than 250 feeders of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) tripped, plunging various parts of the city into darkness.
Heavy rain was reported from different areas of the city, including Lakhsmi Chowk, Mall Raod, Shimla Pahari, Data Darbar, Gulshan-e-Ravi, Johar Town, Gulberg, Samanabad and several other localities.
Heavy rain in Lahore inundated low-lying areas. The rain water entered the houses located in the low-lying areas of the city. Roads were submerged under rain water, disrupting the flow of traffic.
Rain was also reported in other cities of Punjab, including Faisalabad, Kasur, Jhang, Chishtian, Chunian, Nankana Sahib, Pattoke, and adjoining areas. Met office said that the current spell of rain will continue till June 23.
Meanwhile, rain and windstorm with thundershowers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit Baltistan, Kashmir, Sindh and northeast Balochistan have made weather pleasant across the country. Heavy rainfall and hailstorms at few places may also occur at scattered places during the forecast period.
Heavy falls may trigger land sliding in vulnerable areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galyat, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan during the next 48 hours. Downpour may generate flash flooding in nullahs/rivers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and Northeast Balochistan. Downpour may cause urban flooding in Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Lahore.
Amid continuous warnings regarding the pre-monsoon wet spell in Pakistan, Federal Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman on Tuesday warned there was a ‘clear’ risk of urban flooding, particularly in Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, and Islamabad. “Urban areas are likely to face the risk of torrential rains,” she warned in a series of tweets.
She noted that the ministry has directed all federal and provincial authorities to take all possible precautionary measures to deal with the possible catastrophic effects of the expected monsoon rains.
Earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority issued an advisory for all departments concerned to remain high alert and vigilant as a series of heavy rains is about to begin.
According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, rain-windstorm/thundershower is expected in parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit Baltistan, Kashmir, Sindh and northeast Balochistan during the next 24 hours.
