The La Gaceta de Madrid is one of the oldest newspapers to exist as of date. It quickly became the official periodical publication of Spain and was distributed from as early as 1697 to 1936. The seventeenth century priting press produced a number of bulletins and gazettes that were circulated in Europe. These were mostly a private initiative and were strictly limited to informative content. La Gaceta, at the time of its birth, was written and distributed during the reign of Carlos III. He, in 1762, decided to grant the Crown the privilege of printing the Gazette after which an official medium through which information could be known and shared was established. It usually reflected the decisions and stance of the government in power.
