KARACHI - The Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Christian Brecht held a reception at his residence to bid farewell to Dieter Freund, Consul and Deputy Head of Mission. Speaking on the occasion, the German Consul General said, the evening had been arranged to pay tribute to Dieter Freund, a wonderful human being and seasoned diplomat who had served Germany well in a long and remarkable career spanning 44 years He said Dieter was retiring and he wished him a happy retirement and prosperous future.Dieter Freund said Karachi was his last assignment and posting at the end of a long innings with the German diplomatic service. He said the evening gave him an opportunity to say good bye to his many friends in the media who were present in strength at the reception. He said his four years in Karachi had been wonderful as he had made many new friends, but he was saddened by the worsening of the socio-economic situation in the country. He added that he wished the country and its people well, and he would have fond memories of his stay in Karachi. The evening was made all the more lively by the presence of foreign journalists from Germany and UK who are in the city to participate in the two-day international conference on The Middle East in a Changing World: A Contemporary Appraisal. The event has been jointly organized by the Department of International Relations of Karachi University and the Hanns Seidal Foundation of Germany. The Hanns Seidal Foundation representative in Pakistan, Martin Axmann said the world needed peaceful resolutions to the disputes in different regions. A two-member team of German archaeologists, both women, engaged in excavations in Balochistan were also present at the reception.
