ISLAMABAD - Rejecting the proposed gas load management plan of supplying gas to fertilizer units for 15 days in a month, the fertilizer companies Wednesday hinted at further increase in prices as gas outages would further halt the production. All the fertilizer companies in a meeting, with Federal Minister for Industries and Production Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, observed that the governments under discussion plan of supply of gas to fertilizer units for 15 days in a month is not acceptable to them. They categorically told the meeting that gas supply for 15 days in a month to fertilizer units is not only feasible but this step would also result in destruction and damage of their plants. The meeting reviewed the availability of urea in the country and also its increasing prices. They demanded of the government that the government must give them a proper schedule of gas supply. Then the companies would be in a position to tell, How much would be the exact increase in prices of Fertilizer. The more indefinite gas shutdown to fertilizer companies mean less production of fertilizer with further high cost of production that would ultimately result in more increase in prices of fertilizer, they added. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Trading Corporation Pakistan told the meeting that there is sufficient stock of Urea and DAP for Kharif crop. But if the present situation of gas curtailment continues then there might be a shortage of fertilizers at the end of upcoming August. The Minister while showing his serious concern over the fast increasing prices of Urea and DAP said that all fertilizer manufacturing companies must ensure that there is no unreasonable increase in prices of fertilizers. As the much expensive fertilizers would have a bad effect on agri products, he added. The Minister, while feeling the genuine concerns of fertilizer companies, welcomed their suggestions and asked them to prepare a presentation to be given to ECC in its next meeting. ECC is a better forum to decide the genuine concerns of fertilizer companies and address their sufferings, he added. Federal Minister for Industries and Production Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani presided over the meeting. Parliamentary Secretary of MoIP, Secretaries Industries & Production, Food & Agriculture, Chairman TCP and high officials from the Ministries of Finance, Petroleum, Commerce and Gas Supply Companies attended this meeting. Chief Executives and MDs of all the Fertilizer Manufacturing Companies also attended meeting.
