ISLAMABAD - Minister for Communication Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan told the National Assembly (NA) that prior to commencement of Diamir-Bhasha Dam construction activities, construction of two projects on Karakoram Highway (KKH) are essentially required. The minister during the question-hour said that these two road projects would be undertaken by National Highway authority (NHA) on provision of funds by WAPDA. To another question, parliamentary secretary said that due to paucity of funds work on Bhasha dam was not being carried out. In this regard, he said communication ministrys concerned officials were in contact with China. To yet another question about Attabad Lake, he said that work on this project was under way to clear the submerged road for commuters. The minister in a written reply said that construction of two projects including up-gradation & improvement of Thakot-Shatial (Dam site, 169 km) and construction of Shatial-Thor Nullah Bypass (35 km) are essentially required. He said that pre-qualification of contractors, through advertisement in press, was finalised in three packages including Thakot-Pattan, Pattan-Barseen and Barseen-Shatial. To another question, Minister for Environment Samina Khalid Ghurki said the ratio of population was increasing but not to alarming stage in the country at present. The current level of population might have adverse effects on human, animal plants and tropical rain, forest and environment but the same is limited only in vicinity areas of population sources and not in the whole country. The minister for petroleum, in a written reply, said that as per Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) policy any party could import LNG without any government guarantee.
