ISLAMABAD  – China will sponsor and assist all efforts for the promotion of Chinese language learning in Pakistan, new designate Chinese Cultural Counsellor Zhang Yiung Pao said on Friday.

During his first ever visit to the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), the Chinese Cultural Counsellor called on Rector NUML, Maj Gen (r) Masood Hasan and Director General (DG) Brig Azam Jamal. They discussed various issues regarding the Chinese language learning and teaching in Pakistan in detail.

The Counsellor told the Rector that both the Chinese Government and Embassy valued efforts of the University for catering the need of Chinese language learners. He said the Confucious Department of NUML was really a bright example for others to follow as it was playing very active role in providing a platform to the new learners and facilitating the young learners to know about Chinese language and culture.

He assured the Rector that University would be provided with each facility to cope up with the increasing demand of Chinese language teachers in Pakistan.

Zhang further said that there was no problem in providing books and written material for Chinese language teachers but as far as availability of Chinese teachers were concerned it would take some time and the Chinese Government was working on it. The Counsellor was accompanied by the Head of Chinese Department Dr Lei Weizhong and head of Confucius department of NUML.

Rector NUML told the visiting guest about his recent visit to China where he visited Confucious Headquarter in Beijing and Beijing Language Cultural University (BLCU). He briefed about the university and also told the counsellor that NUML’s major concern was how learning Chinese could be further promoted and accelerated as the university was regularly receiving requests from different universities and institutions for the provision of learning material and teachers.

The Rector told that there had also been a request from Pitaro Cadet College and the university was sending their teachers to teach Chinese language there.

Moreover, Rector said that there was also requirement of doing more on the other fields of education. NUML could not only send students and faculty members to China for Chinese language learning but scholarship for other disciplines of NUML should also be announced.

Chinese Cultural Attache assured Rector and Director General Brig Azam Jamal that all the demands would be granted and all possible assistance would be given to NUML for better teaching of Chinese language.
