JI hails SC for allowing converts to live freely

KARACHI - Jamaat-e-Islami activists Dr Rukhsana Jabeen and Dr Samia Rahil Kazi have hailed the Supreme Court’s decision allowing women converted to Islam to lead their lives in accordance to their personal choice.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, the JI activists said Islam prohibits application of coercive tactics compelling anyone be it man or woman to change his or her religion no provision for any compulsion viz a viz making choice about ones religion under Islam,” they said.
The activists, however, added that if an adult decides to enter into the fold of Islam, after its proper understanding, then no body can prevail upon their decisions. They said, since Faryal Bibi, Alima and Hafsa have, before the court and via electronic media, confirmed of accepting Islam out of their free will hence they must not be subjected to any sort of pressure tactic.
“There must be single yardstick for all women and while allowing some to exercise their constitutional rights and disapproving similar decisions made by some from any specific or particular smacks of hypocrisy,” they said.
The JI activists said they do and would support women from minority communities who may “personally” be complaining of being subjected to coercive tactics viz a viz their choice of religion.
They condemned reported attempts made by influential quarters involved in abduction of hapless women, including both Muslims and non-Muslims, and then making them enter into forced marriages so as to avert criminal proceedings.
They said all women need to come together to protect subjected to such atrocities without any distinction and that these issues must be handled on genuinely sympathetic grounds without being politicized.
