ISLAMABAD - Chairman Press Council of Pakistan (PCP), Raja Muhammad Shafqat Khan Abbasi, has said that the print media is the powerful organ of the state and it can play a vital role in promoting the public opinion in the right direction.

Addressing a seminar “National Media Policy and Role of Press Council of Pakistan” organized by the Department of Communication and Media Studies, Hazara University, in collaboration with the PCP, he said that the menace of corruption, terrorism, extremism, non-tolerance and social crimes have crept in our society but these should not be projected to bewilder the very psyche of society.

He was of the view that a code of ethics is required to be observed by our journalist, while reporting regarding the wave of crime in the society.

In this regard, he said that the Press Council of Pakistan had already done a considerable groundwork by involving the owners of the newspapers, eminent journalists, retired judges and the prestigious universities of the country to work jointly for evolving a civilized approach for the dissemination of information to the general public.

He said that this practice of filtration has already been adopted by the developed world and Pakistan also needs to adopt this regulatory policy for reformative purpose of the masses.

He further said that the faculty of Journalism in the universities and the experienced professionals in the field can help usefully for devising an infrastructure of encouraging Journalism with a sense of responsibility, adding there are conscious Journalists with responsible attitude eager to educate the public opinion in positive direction.

Earlier, Prof. Shoukat Hussain Shah, Chairman Department of Journalism and Media Studies, introduced the Chairman Press Council of Pakistan who had a rich experience in the field besides being an eminent retired judge of the High Court.
