KARACHI – The scourge of ethnic and political bloodletting continued in the port city on Friday, killing at least 18 people and wounding several others, police officials said. The reason behind this fresh wave of violence was cited as Thursday’s killing of an MQM worker, Naeemuddin, in Gulfamabad area of Orangi Town. According to the sources, a targeted search operation was carried out by law-enforcement agencies, but that did not help much, as trade of fire between rival ethnic groups continued the entire Friday in the troubled town.Nevertheless, the security agencies claimed to have rounded up over two dozen criminals across the city. But they did not step up their presence in several localities, where the rival groups fought pitched gun battles.Earlier in the day, unidentified gunmen abducted and killed one Mukhtar Alam, whose dead body was found lying near KMC Hospital. Another body said to be that of Yaqoob Atta Muhammad was recovered near a banquet hall, Bagh-e-Noor. Both the victims were allied to the MQM. Another MQM worker, namely Shoaib Sohail, was killed near Burma Hotel in a drive-by shooting by a bike-borne duo. The three killings raised tension in Orangi and its adjoining areas and anger among leaders and supporters of the MQM.  As a result, trade of fire ensued between rival ethnic groups, claiming the lives of two people, Kamran and Nawab Khan. A man, namely Salman, was also injured with gunshot wounds near Qazzafi Chowk.In another incident of firing, one Abdul Hamid, a resident of Kanwari Colony, was killed in Aligarh area of the city. In Haryana Colony, unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire at a bus stop, killing 19-year-old Majarj and 17-year-old Imtiaz Qadir. One Fayyaz was also wounded.In a similar incident of firing on Shah Waliuallah Road, unidentified miscreants showered a truck and water tanker with bullets, killing Wazir Khan, 35, a resident of Baldia.  Two real brothers, Fazlur Rehman, 18, and Rafiq Roshan were also wounded in the firing.  In Jamshaid Town area, unidentified armed men shot dead a rickshaw driver, Abdul Ghafar Baloch, a resident of Orangi Town.Separately, a dead body was found from New Sabzi Mandi area. The victim was identified as Babar Bux. Another body said to be that of Abdul Rehman, 23, a resident of Dawood Goth, was recovered from Memon Goth. An injured man, Musarrat Ali Khan, succumbed to his wounds at a private hospital. He was attacked in the limits of the Frere Police Station. A cobbler, namely Dastagir, 9, was gunned down in the area of the Jauharabad Police Station. Separately, a Jiye Sindh Qaumi Mahaz activist, namely Tariq Katchi, son of Yaqoob, was shot dead while another worker, Usman Ghani, received bullet injuries. According to witnesses, Katchi was distributing pamphlets about his party’s strike when attacked. The victim was a resident of Malir. Separately, one Rafiq Khan was killed in North Karachi area. SHO Raja Tariq said the victim was standing at a bus stop when unidentified armed men targeted him.In another incident, a man, namely Wajid, son of Mohammad Amin, was mowed down in Banaras area. In another incident, a man, 40-year-old Badaruddin, son of Zafaruddin, was killed in sector 5-E of New Karachi.
