SC removes VC Punjab university for transferring university land to govt

The Supreme Court's Lahore Registry ordered the removal of vice-chancellor of University of the Punjab, Dr Zakaria Zakar.

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Saqib Nisar, was hearing the sou motu case on illegal appointments of vice-chancellors and ordered the government to immediately appoint a new vice-chancellor for PU.

The Punjab government requested the court for more time related the appointment of new vice-chancellor. CJP, then, ordered to appoint the senior most professor of the university as interim vice-chancellor.

Moreover, the two member bench headed by CJP Saqib Nisar took action against the transfer of University of the Punjab’s land to provincial government and suspended the transfer of university land to the government.

The CJP questioned on whose authority the university agreed to give 80 Kanal of its land to the government.

Furthermore, the court also summoned the members of the syndicate that was responsible for selling the university land. Later, the members of the syndicate had suspended their decision to transfer university land to government.

“On whose authority did the syndicate ask the University for the land? The court has been informed that the land was allotted for the construction of the Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project,” CJP questioned the syndicate.

He also asked that why hasn’t a continuous vice-chancellor been appointed at the university in the last 2.5 years. “Please inform us who is responsible for this,” he remarked.

“The vice-chancellor should resign first and then the order will be reviewed,” CJP remarked on the request to review the court order.
