IMF projects Pakistan’s gross debt at 71.3pc of GDP in 2022

ISLAMABAD -The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected a decline in the govern- ment gross debt for Pakistan, i.e. from 74 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 to 71.3 percent in 2022. According to the ‘Fiscal Monitor Fis- cal Policy from pandemic to war’, the government gross debt for Pakistan
has projected to decline in the years to come. The gross debt to GDP was 74 percent in fiscal year 2021. However, it is projected to decline to 71.3 percent in current fiscal year and 66.8 percent in upcoming financial year 2023. Similarly, the net debt for Pakistan is also project- ed to decline from 66.4 percent of the GDP in 2021 to 65.4 percent in 2022. Meanwhile, it would further decline to 61.7 percent in the next year 2023 The government’s revenue is pro- jected at 12.6 percent of GDP for 2022 and 12.9 percent for 2023 against 12.5 percent during the same period of 2021. The fund has projected govern- ment primary balance at -1 percent for 2022 as against -1.1 percent in 2021. Furthermore, the government’s over- all balance is projected at -5.8 percent
for 2022 against -6.1 percent in 2021. The report has projected government expenditure at 18.4 percent of the GDP in 2022 and 17.1 percent in 2023 com- pared to 18.6 percent in 2021. There would be total financing need of about 35.9 percent of GDP in 2021. Earlier on Tuesday, the IMF has pro- jected Pakistan’s GDP growth at 4 per- cent during current fiscal year. The Fund has projected inflation rate in double digits at 11.2 percent for the year 2022 against 8.9 percent in 2021. Meanwhile, the report has projected consumer pric- es for the end of period of 2023 at 10.5 percent.
