KARACHI - The fishermen on Wednesday staged protest here in-front of Karachi Press Club against the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), they demanded to allow the fishermen to anchor their boats in shoreline in Gizri Creek for fishing. A large number of women, children, representatives of civil society and political activists attended the protest led by Pakistan Fisher Folk (PFF). Carrying banners and placards inscribed with their demands, the protestors chanted slogans against DHA. Ibrahim Hyderi, Rehri Goth, Hacks Bay, Deh Allah Dino, Kiamari, Khada and other fishermen marched from Sindh Assembly and arrived outside KPC and started protest for their prolong demands. Muhammad Ali Shah, Chairperson PFF, Sami Memon, Qadir Channa of of Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party, Abdul Bari of Awami National Party ANP and Illahi Bux Baloch of SPO addressed the demonstration. Addressing to the participants, the speakers demanded that fishermen should be immediately provided with a jetty in Gizri area as they can make their lives. They condemned the increasing cruelties of DHA and extreme violation of human rights; they adding that DHA was mostly overcrowded with civil servants the said authority should be handed over to the city government. The speakers also demanded that the fishermen should immediately be provided with a jetty in Gizri. These jetties will ensure a permanent and sustainable employment for fishing families. On the occasion, the representatives of the political parties and NGOs ensured to PFF that all political parties would continue their support to the ongoing struggle of the fishermen. They also demanded that there should be accountability of DHA through civil institutions. DHA has crossed the limits of human rights that must be checked in some way.
