A grave dug in this gap

There is a grave credibility crisis in PPP leadership centered on the person of President Asif Ali Zardari. Mr Zardari is not trusted at all by international donors due to his past baggage and reputation for minting money while in government. The only solution now is to choose someone from the ranks of PPP that is worthy of being President and relegate Mr Zardari to his other position of being co-chairman of the PPP. If that were to happen, the logical choice in PPP as a candidate par excellence would be Barrister Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, a brilliant man who is also clean as a gem cut for the post. The single step of passing on Presidency to someone else, if Mr Zardari were to do so, would boost the image of PPP and Pakistani state would get a highly qualified person with impeccable record to be its figurehead. But if things remain as they are, the current PPP President would hang like a millstone around the neck of countrys premier political party. Mr Zardari would need a lot of introspection to take this crucial step to bridge the massive credibility gap that is there between foreign aid flows and Pakistan. He has to do it if aid is to be restored in this critical hour. -DR M.YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore, August 13.
