Sabzazar rainwater pond claims two minors

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE Two minor boys were pulled out dead hours after they drowned in a pond of rainwater here in Sabzazar area, police and rescue workers said here on Saturday. Local residents said that the boys, later identified as Danish, 11, and 12-year-old Rehan, were taking a bath in the stagnant rainwater when suddenly they drowned in the deep water. There was an empty plot near the Sabzazar police station that turned into pond during the recent monsoon rains, locals said, adding, the children in the locality often take a bath in that pond. Some passersby spotted the kids while they were struggling to come out of deep water and then vanished. They called in the rescue workers who managed to pull out the dead bodies after hectic efforts. The police later handed over the bodies to the deceaseds families. Eyewitnesses said that many emotional scenes were witnessed as the rescuers pulled out the bodies from the pond. Meanwhile, a 40-year-old cable operator was shot dead by his cousins over the dispute of Rs 90,000 here in North Cantonment Area, police said on Saturday. The 16-year-old nephew of the deceased also sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to a local hospital where his condition was reported to be critical. Police investigators said the deceased, later identified as Javed alias Jaida, a resident of Ghosia Colony, along with his nephew, Jabir, was on the way to his cable-network office when his cousins Ahsan, Usman and Noona opened fire on them. Father of three, Javed, died on the spot while his nephew sustained bullet injuries, and was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. The killers fled away from the crime scene. The police have registered the case on the complaint of Akbar, brother of the deceased. According to the complainant, the deceased had monetary dispute with his cousins. Further investigations were underway.
