ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif was made the opposition leader in the National Assembly on Monday.
NA Speaker Asad Qaiser approved Sharif’s appointment and a notification was issued in this regard. Sharif was unanimously nominated as the opposition leader by all the opposition parties.
On August 17, PTI Chairman Imran Khan was elected prime minister with 176 votes while his opponent Shehbaz Sharif could only secure 96 votes. The PPP had abstained from taking part in the elections as they had reservations over the nomination of Shehbaz Sharif as PML-N’s candidate for premiership.
SHARE IN COMMITTEES
Government and opposition parties will decide share of each political party in the formation of standing committees of the National Assembly and Public Accounts Committee after Eid-ul-Azha.
A series of meetings between the opposition and government to decide the share of political parties according to its strength in the National Assembly standing committees will be held in the first week of September, said sources in national assembly secretariat.
Both sides will also decide the formation and share each party in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The slot of chairman Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will go to opposition leader in the National Assembly by default. Two former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif had signed a charter of democracy (CoD) in May 2006. The CoD with other important decisions had also decided to give slot of Chairman PAC to Leader of Opposition. This clause mentioned in the CoD was respected in the tenure of previous National Assembly.
