ISLAMABAD - The team of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) probing the Haj scam almost after delay of 24 hours succeeded to register an FIR against brother-in-law of former Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi allegedly on charges of taking money from a tour operator as commission. The case took a U-turn on Monday when the complainant, Raja Tariq Mahmood, a local tour operator and a resident of Rawalpindi decided to withdrew his statement given before the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan against Abdullah Mahmood Khokhar, brother-in-law of Hamid Saeed Kazmi. However, the investigators succeeded to woo Raja Tariq and formally registered an FIR against Khokhar under sections 163 and 420 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). FIA had to produce Abdullah Mahmood Kokhar before a local court for physical remand on Monday but it could not do so after the complainant took a U-turn in the case. FIA had arrested Kokhar from Lahore, the other day, through its Lahore region. Probably, FIA would produce him before the local court of Islamabad today. An official of FIA connected with the investigations on the condition of anonymity told The Nation that Raja Tariq Mahmmod on Monday had informed the investigation team that he and his family was receiving life threats from some unknown persons for becoming the plaintiff in the case. He said that Raja Tariq was not ready to become the plaintiff as he thought that the life of his family members was more important than anything else. According to FIA sources, Mahmood claimed that he was receiving threatening calls from District Dir of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, FIA sources said that they apprised Raja Tariq that he had given a statement before SC against Kokhar under section 164 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). And when the investigators informed him that he would be booked for falsely accusing a person under section 182 of PPC, he at once became ready to become the complainant in the case. The sources in FIA also disclosed that the high ups of the agency connected with the investigations of Haj scam were under severe pressure after they dared to arrest the brother-in-law of Kazmi. Azam Khan Swati had produced an audio CD before the Supreme Court about a conversation between Khokhar and Raja Tariq Mahmmod allegedly about taking a commission in Haj affairs. Raja Tariq Mahmood had also endorsed the transcript of the CD before SC alleging Khokhar for taking kick backs from him for facilitating him in the Haj dealings. According to the transcript of CD obtained by FIA, Khokhar and nephew of Hamid Saeed Kazmi, Rana Irfan had demanded money as kickbacks for each pilgrim from Raja Tariq Mahmood. But Mahmood in the conversation refused to pay the amount saying that Khokhar was demanding more money from him as commission from that decided earlier. Khokhar in his conservation also tells Raja Mahmood that he has talked to the minister (Hamid Saeed Kazmi) and every thing would be ok soon.
