ISLAMABAD/LAHORE - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has directed that the decisions regarding equitable distribution of gas taken in the last ECC meeting held on December 7th, 2010 be implemented in true letter and spirit. The shortage of gas, he said, should be shared by all stake-holders and the judicious supply be ensured across the board. He was chairing a special high-level meeting to review the gas supply situation throughout the country particularly the industrial sector in Punjab here at the PMs House on Monday afternoon. The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources to expedite the decision regarding import of LNG with the concerned Ministries for early implementation. Gilani also announced supply of Sui Gas to industries in the Punjab for five days a week. The Prime Minister also asked for convening of the Third review meeting of Energy Summit at the earliest in consultation with all the stakeholders. While elaborating upon the gas and energy situation, he emphasised that decisions taken in this regard should clearly reflect uniform approach in distribution of resources among all the stakeholders after taking them on board. He directed that both Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) should focus on reducing losses on account of leakages and theft. He said that effective policies should be adopted to ensure the use of certified appliances having efficiencies of 50 per cent instead of the average 22 per cent at present to help gas conservation. Gilani also directed to launch public awareness campaign for adoption of conservation measures by the consumers. He stressed for measures to encourage entrepreneur friendly policies to further enhance exploration and increased gas availability. Shahbaz Sharif thanked the Prime Minister for his personal interest and attention towards resolving gas supply situation and appreciated his political sagacity and wisdom in handling national issues through consensus approach. The decisions taken in the meeting, he said, would greatly help to avert the crisis situation in the country in general and in Punjab in particular. Earlier, the Minister for Petroleum & Natural Resources briefed the participants of the meeting on the gas supply situation throughout the country highlighting the increasing demand of gas because of the winter season. He also mentioned that one of the reasons of shortage had been increase in domestic connections during the year. He also explained some of the difficulties in implementation of decisions taken earlier because of gas supply and consumption situation. The representatives of APTMA, fertilizer industry, LNG importers and CNG also explained the difficulties of their respective sectors due to shortage of gas supply. The meeting was also attended by Raja Pervez Ashraf Minister for Water & Power, Syed Naveed Qamar, Minister for Petroleum & Natural Resources Secretary, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Water & Power, Provincial Secretaries Industries and Commerce Punjab, MD PEPCO, MD SNGPL and other senior officials. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the spirit of unity across political divide demonstrated by the nation during the visit of Chinese Prime Minister is a reflection of people to people love and affection between the two countries. The high-level contacts particularly the recent visit of the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao would have long-term benefits for the people of the two countries. He was talking to the Chief Minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif who called on him at the Prime Ministers House here. The Prime Minister congratulated the Chief Minister of Punjab for the maintenance of law and order in the province during the Ashurah-e-Muharram. It was heartening to note, he said, that no untoward incident took place in the country on this solemn occasion. The Prime Minister also shared the outcome of his recent visits to Afghanistan and Turkey with the Chief Minister of Punjab. Shahbaz congratulated the Prime Minister on the successful visit of the Chinese Prime Minister to Pakistan and appreciated the Prime Ministers political acumen in taking all the political parties on board in this regard. The unity shown by the nation, he said, has sent a very positive message across the globe that all elements of national power are on the same page both over friendship with China as well as national issues. The Chief Minister further appreciated the assurance of support extended by the Prime Minister during Ashurah-e-Muharram which served as a motivating force to help maintain law and order in every part of the country.
