JAIPUR - The Rajasthan high court on Tuesday dismiss-ed Pakistani virologist Dr Khalil Chishti’s plea challenging the life imprisonment awarded to him.  The sentence comes after an 18-year long trial.

Chishti, convicted of murder, had challenged his life imprisonment in the high court and demanded acquittal on humanitarian grounds. Civil rights activist including National Advisory Council member Aruna Roy demanded the release of Chishti, just as Pakistan had freed Gopaldas, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan.

Chishti’s family had met the governor of Rajasthan, Shivraj Patil, with whom the mercy petition has been pending.

The family appealed to him to release the virologist under Article 161 of the Constitution (remission of sentence).
