KARACHI - Police on Tuesday killed a suspected bandit and wounded his accomplices allegedly in an encounter, causing massive protest on Korangi Road in Defence Housing Authority (DHA).

The family, relatives and residents of locality of the alleged bandit killed in the encounter staged a protest demonstration, resulting in massive traffic jam. Police claimed to have arrested two bandits with bullet wounds namely Nadeem and Abdur Rasheed. Police further said that the accused were wounded during an exchange of fire when it intercepted them near Defence Morr.

It said it shifted the accused persons to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where Nadeem succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The family later received his body from the hospital and staged a protest demonstration on Korangi Road by placing the corpse in front of them. The family members alleged that police had killed their loved one in a fake encounter, and the police personnel responsible should be arrested and punished. The deceased was a resident of Akhtar Colony and used to work at a shop in Phase II, Defence.

His family said that Nadeem was returning home when police killed him in a fake encounter. The protesters, however, ended their protest after police officials assured them of their complete cooperation.

SHO Khalid Abbasi said that Nadeem, along with his accomplices, was busy in looting valuables from a citizen, Abdul Wasey, when police personnel on a routine patrol reached the site and attempted to arrest them. “But the culprits attempted to escape, while at the same time resorted to indiscriminate fire at police,” the SHO added. However, police has no criminal record of Nadeem. Police high-ups have ordered to initiate inquiry into the alleged encounter.
