LAHORE - A teenage domestic servant yesterday was found hanged at a house in a posh residential colony located in Chuhng police precincts.

The girl was identified by police as 13-year-old Fatima Bibi, a resident of Okara district who was working as housemaid at the residence of Usman for the last several months.

Police sources say they believe the girl committed suicide to flee domestic violence. An official at the Chuhng police station said that the girl’s the parents were not willing to initiate any legal action against the house owner.  The house owner told the police that Fatima took her own life by hanging herself with the ceiling fan at the servant quarter. Her body was hanging from the ceiling fan with a piece of cloth tied to her neck as we entered the room, a police investigator said. The body was moved to the morgue.

The police will hand over the body to the family as they don’t want to file any complaint with the police, another official said.

The complaints of abuse and torture involving underage domestic workers are not rare in this society. Most of the young domestic servants, who work round-the-clock in posh housing societies, are paid very low wages. They are frequently tortured by members of influential families and the police rarely take action against the powerful individuals.

In early October, investigators identified a young woman as housemaid a day after she found slaughtered in a suitcase alongside a drain near Choburgi Park. The victim was a domestic servant in Sattu Katla area.
