ISLAMABAD " Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that relations between Pakistan and Malaysia, already based on historic ties, common faith and culture, need to be enhanced further in the fields of education, media, trade, investment and economy. Prime Minister Gilani said this here on Friday while talking to a Malaysian media delegation, led by Dato Abdul Mutalib Datuk Seri Mohamed Razk, Chairman Media Prima Berhad, which called on him at PM House. The prime minister said that media in Pakistan was vibrant and is playing its role in the true sense as the fourth pillar of the state. He said the government believes in the independence of media and every effort would be made to ensure its independence where it could perform its duties without fear of any external pressure. While commenting on media collaboration between Pakistan and other countries, Prime Minister Gilani said that its enormous growth provided opportunity for collaboration between private media sectors of Pakistan and other countries, including Malaysia. He underscored the need for closer cooperation between the media of the two countries through increased exchange of visits of media persons and programmes so that people of both the countries could benefit and understand each other in a better way. The prime minister also urged the media to play its role in highlighting the importance of closer economic cooperation among the Muslim world for achieving development targets faster and increasing economic opportunities for its people. Emphasizing the need to create unity in Islamic Ummah to meet the present challenges, Prime Minister Gilani said Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) should be strengthened and transformed into a vibrant organisation to serve as a platform for cooperation among the Islamic countries. Yousuf Raza Gilani also said that the media should highlight that Islam is a religion of peace and preaches tolerance, inter-faith harmony and compassion. He said that the media should make dedicated efforts for bridging the widening gulf between Islam and other faiths. The delegation on this occasion offered training facilities to various media organisation of Pakistan, like APP, PBC and PTV. They also expressed their resolve to continue their efforts in promoting the objective image of the Islamic world. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman was also present in the meeting.
