PESHAWAR The NWFP Government on Saturday dissolved all the Local Government bodies in the province and decided that the LB elections for the next term would be held on party basis within the next six months. A notification issued in this connection by the Local Government department, said, In the light of the provisions contained in section-179 (B) of the NWFP Local Government Ordinance-2001 amended vide NWFP Local Government (Amendment) Act-2010, the NWFP government dissolve all District Councils, Tehsil Councils, Town Councils and Union Councils in all districts of the province with immediate effect. And consequently all the Nazims, Naib Nazims, and members of the councils in the province cease to hold their respective offices. It further said that after dissolution of the local bodies, the competent authority authorised all the District Coordination Officers (DCOs) in all 24 districts in the NWFP to perform duties of the administrators in place of defunct district Nazims in their respective districts in addition to their own duties with immediate effect. The NWFP Senior Minister, Bashir Ahmad Bilour while speaking during a news conference at the Committee Room of the NWFP Assembly said that They dont have any objection on the Local Government System except that being a provincial subject it was given to the Federal government under schedule-VI by the then President General (Retd.) Pervez Musharraf, founder of the system through an ordinance in 2001. The incumbent set up of the Local Government had already completed its tenure, therefore, nothing was wrong of its dissolution and holding of fresh elections within next six month on basis of the parties, he informed. He further said that it was the best system as the people were empowered at the gross root level through it. He said that ACOs and DDOs would perform the duties of administrators in place of defunct union councils Nazims in all 24-distrcts of the province. The countdown starts from today to hold fresh elections within next six months. Heads of the schools and educational institutions will be authorized to facilitate people at union council level, he added. We will accept decision of the court regarding the Local Government system, he replied when asked regarding a petition filed in a court of law against its dissolution. Stern action would be taken against the administrators, if anyone will be found incapable to run affairs just for six months, he concluded.
