NEW YORK - A correspondent of a leading American newspaper covering the US Marines assault against Marja has given poor marks to the performance of the Afghan army, which supposed to be leading the anti-Taliban campaign. In every engagement between the Taliban and one front-line American Marine unit, the operation has been led in almost every significant sense by American officers and troops, correspondent C.J. Chivers of The New York Times said in a dispatch from the battlefront Saturday that denigrates Afghan forces.
