LAHORE  - Lahore DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf has said that the police have started biometric verification of residents in the provincial metropolis. The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has provided well-equipped vehicles to the Lahore police for this purpose.

While talking to reporters, the city operations police chief said that the police during security sweeps would carry out biometric verification of the local residents.

A state-of-the-art biometric system has been put in place in these vehicles and the criminals’ database provided by the Lahore police department has also been added in the system. “This (database) will help police identity the criminals during the search operations being conducted across Lahore on daily basis,” Haider Ashraf said.

Giving further details about this initiative, the DIG said that the basic purpose of this project is to collect and maintain complete data of all the residents of Lahore. Since we are confronting the most serious security challenges, the database would defiantly help law enforcement agencies hunt down the criminals and militants wanted to the police in heinous crimes.

This system would be extended to all over the provincial metropolis within a short span of time, he underlined. The field officers are strictly ordered to ensure biometric verification of suspected elements during the search operations. Once this system is fully put into practice, the police would detain the persons who would not be verified through the biometric system.

The DIG also said that all the divisional SPs are directed to complete the database of elements involved in criminal activities in their jurisdiction as early as possible so that the criminals’ database could be included in the biometric system.
