KARACHI - The house on Friday, which was called in order by Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza, unanimously passed –The Sindh Consumers Protection Bill, 2014, a bill to provide and protect interests of consumers in the province.

Speaking in favour of the bill, Sindh Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Sikandar Mahendaro, said that the public in general is facing serious difficulties in purchasing essential commodities, which are being manufactured and sold without proper checks. In order to promote and protect rights and interest of consumer, it looks to make provisions to establish Consumer Protection Council and Consumers Tribunals for the public, he argued.

The house adopted the bill after incorporating certain amendments recommended by the house Standing Committee.

Sindh Minister for Information and Local Bodies’ Sharjeel Inam Memon informed the Sindh Assembly on Friday that work on four mega projects of Karachi would start soon adding that commissioner and deputy commissioners were given powers to look into accounts of local government departments and take action against malpractices and misappropriation in funds.

Responding to a question raised by PML-N member Ameer Ali Shah Sherazi, he said that “Pollution Free and Green Sindh, for brotherhood and friendly Sindh” campaign is being launched from Feb 23. He called upon the elected representatives to play their role to make the campaign successful.

The minister said that complaints against town Municipal Administrations (TMAs) were pouring in on the misuse of funds. He said that Sindh government has already granted powers to commissioner and deputy commissioners in other districts of province to monitor affairs to TMAs and to check accounts for misusage of funds.

Now, he said, the Sindh government has authorised commissioner and deputy commissioners in Karachi to check accounts of local government departments of metropolis, adding that it was the responsibility of these officers to further transfer these power to lower tiers.

Memon said that works on four mega projects of Karachi- Mehran underpass at Shrae Faisal, 26 KM Flyovers from Jinnah Bridge to Qauidabad, Dual Carriageway connecting National highway to Super highway and Rapid Bus Service project etc would start soon. The work of flyover Jinnah Brige Qauidabad would be completed within two and half years, he added.

He further said directives have been issued to TMOs to hold open ketcheries in their respective areas to redress complaints of people and warned that action would be taken against TMOs if they failed.

Sindh Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Sikandar Mahendaro also tabled-The Sindh Board of Technical Education (Amendment) Bill, 2015 in the house.

Responding to a call attention notice of MQM member Kamran Akhtar regarding appropriate security measures at schools under Metropolitan Karachi, the minister said similar securities were being provided to schools running under KMC.

The house carried a resolution moved by PPP member Dr Sohrab Sarki for provision of Sui gas to towns of Municipal Committee Thul and was adjourned till Monday after completion of agenda.
