The lawyers’ movement to restore former CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had both positive and negative effects. On the negative side, it bolstered the ego of the lawyers’ community, for all the wrong reasons. Some lawyers in Lahore, locked a courtroom of the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Chaudhry Farrukh Hussain, when he declined bail, in case of a cheque fraud by a very wealthy businessman. As the cheque amount was for Rs35 million, a huge amount, I am sure this businessman must have paid a hefty fee to his lawyer to get him off the hook.

The businessman, at the time of issuing the cheque, must have known if it would be cashed or not. In the first case protecting a fraudulent person is unethical. It is however not the first time when lawyers stormed the court and booed out judge. It has happened often now, which is a clear sign that lawyers have no regard for the law and that too by the custodians of the law, the lawyers’ community. It is shameful, had such an act of vandalism taken place in Norway, the lawyers would have been sent to the tundra region for a few years.
