Imran warns of protest if parliament used against judiciary

PESHAWAR -  Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan Tuesday warned he would bring the people to the streets to save democracy and judiciary.

“Today I am making it clear that I will bring people to the streets if a state institution is used against another with the sole purpose to achieve the desired results,” he said while talking to media persons here.

The Supreme Court and NAB courts had given an adequate opportunity to disqualified premier Nawaz Sharif to defend himself, but he had only produced a fake Qatari letter, he said, adding Nawaz Sharif was scared of the court verdicts which were coming soon.

To hide his corruption, he alleged, Nawaz Sharif was planning to use the parliament against the judiciary. He said the apex court had shown much leniency towards Nawaz Sharif for his contemptuous remarks; that was why he was taking advantage of it and criticising the judiciary.

The PTI chief said PML-N must not use the parliament against the judiciary as the former disqualified premier wanted to pitch the parliament against the judiciary. He threatened to bring the people to the streets if democracy and the judiciary came under attack.

He said, PML-N had attacked judges with sticks and used money to buy them in 1997. “This method is used by a mafia. This is the mafia which either buys people or attacks them. This is how a mafia works,” the PTI chief averred

Imran Khan said horse-trading was going on to buy members of the provincial assemblies ahead of the Senate elections scheduled on March 3. He stated he had come to Peshawar to meet the PTI MPAs. He claimed he had also been offered Rs 400 million for a seat in the upper house of the parliament.

“All PTI MPAs are with me and they will remain loyal to the party which is sure to win six Senate seats from KP. PTI workers have decided to stage sit-ins in front of the houses of the MPAs if they go against the party in the Senate elections,” he added.

He announced if PTI came to power, it would ensure direct elections of the Senate to avoid horse-trading.

To a query, Imran Khan claimed he never, even for a minute, used the KP government’s helicopter for his personal use. “It is good that NAB is investigating the matter. I will again say I never used KP’s official helicopter for my personal work,” he reiterated.

“I even pay from my pocket whenever I stay at Pakhtunkhwa House in Nathiagali,” he claimed, adding tax money should always be used for the betterment of the people and not for personal interest.

The NAB should also take notice of the use of the government’s airplane and helicopters by Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and other children, he concluded.
