A recent survey conducted by Ayub Agriculture Research Institute (AARI) in Faisalabad revealed that 65% of agricultural land in six important cities of the province has become unusable because of farmers using water contaminated with industrial waste and domestic sewerage to irrigate the land.
Industrial waste is full of harmful chemicals and domestic sewerage contains poisonous items which are absorbed by vegetables and grains grown on land.
Our government should take immediate notice of the situation and construct separate drains for industrial waste and domestic sewerage. Laws should be formulated and implemented against the use of contaminated water for irrigation.
