rawalpindi - The police investigation into the gang rape of a college girl took a new turn on Saturday after the detained accused stated before investigators that he had developed friendship with the 19-year-old girl through mobile phone.
The accused, identified as Moheen Akhter, had later on brought her to an apartment located in a private housing society with her own consent, informed sources.
It was also established that it was not a gang rape case rather the accused had developed sexual relations with the girl through mutual understanding during their two night stay in the apartment, they added.
The accused further confessed that he was not accompanied by other men and was alone when he drove to Mughal Colony, Sukho from Committee Chowk Rawalpindi in a rented car on November 25, 2017 around 9pm to pick the girl for a date, sources said. The Call Data Record obtained by the investigators of Jatli police also supported the confession of the accused, they said.
However, the police have decided to verify the confession of the accused by grilling the owners of the car showroom and the apartment, sources said.
A team of Jatli police will produce the accused in court of area magistrate today (Sunday) to obtain his physical remand for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Regional Police Officer Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja wrote a letter to City Police Officer Israr Ahmed Khan Abbasi directing him to investigate the case on merit and to finalise it at the earliest.
Moheen Akhter said that he received a missed call from an unknown number on 20/11/2017 when he was present in his shop at Raja Bazaar.
He called back on the unknown number which was received by a girl and the two began talking. “She insisted that I come to her house for a date and I declined. Later, she asked me to come to Mughal Colony to pick her up to take her to a date elsewhere,” the accused told police. He added that he hired a car on rent from a showroom at Committee Chowk and drove to Sukho to pick up the girl. Moheen said that he brought the girl to an apartment located in Phase 1 of a private housings society.
“The apartment was owned by my friend Asif Khan, a resident of Peshawar and dealer of mobile phones,” he stated. The accused confessed that he spent two nights in the apartment with the girl and the two had intercourse through mutual understanding. Moheen also stated that Rahil Munir had called him and asked about whereabouts of the girl on which he informed him that they were residing in an apartment.
He said he dropped the girl back to her house two days later after which she registered a kidnapping and gang rape against him and three others. Police has made the statement of accused a part of the investigation report, sources said.
Investigation Officer/Sub Inspector (SI) M Akram Niazi, when contacted, confirmed the development. He said it was suggested during initial investigation that the girl was not gang raped.
He said the detained accused confessed before police he brought the girl to the apartment on her own will where he developed sexual relations with her.
He said according to CDR, the presence of other three accused Rahil Munir, Nabeel Munir and Sadia, the wife of Rahul, was not proved on the crime scene. “The tower location of the area shows only the presence of Moheen and the girl at Mughal Colony on the day she claimed to be kidnapped by four people,” SI said.
He said the confession of accused would be verified from all possible angles. “I will solve this case purely on merit,” he said.
Meanwhile, CPO Israr Abbasi summoned the victim girl and the IO in his office following orders of RPO. He directed IO to nab the fleeing accused Rahil Munir and produce before him along with the detainee and two other accused he had been given clean chit during investigation.
