Islamabad - Three doctors were injured at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences as attendants attacked them for not putting their patient on ventilator.

The incident occurred during night shift when attendants of a patient, Nazar, demanded a ventilator for the patient.

An official informed The Nation that PIMS emergency head Dr Farrukh Kamal, however; refused to give the facility due non-availability of the equipment. The official added that the emergency head also denied the ventilator as it was not prescribed for the patient from concerned doctor. The inflexible behaviour from both sides led to exchange of harsh words between the doctor and the patient’s family.

Resultantly, the clash turned violent and the attendants started beating the emergency head and two other doctors which caused serious injuries to them.

Along with Dr Farrukh Kamal, Dr Fazal e Rabbi and Dr Aziz Bangash were subjected to torture. Dr Fazal e Rabbi’s arm was fractured in the attack.

The official said that the situation turned out of control of the hospital’s security department and it had to call police to intercept and normalise the situation. The Police arrested the accused and registered a case against them.

Meanwhile, Young Doctors Assoiciation (YDA) while protesting the attack suspended the services to the patients. The YDA announced to not admit the patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital till the issue is resolved.

Talking to The Nation, Dr Farrukh Kamal confirmed the incident, adding that no wound was serious and the matter would be resolved.

The patient’s family claimed that the doctors deliberately showed negligence while their patient was critical and in need of the ventilator.

Attacks on doctors have become a routine matter at PIMS where attendants attack the doctors for multiple reasons.

The police sources added that the PIMS administration was not pursuing the case willfully while the accused was in custody. Police also asked the PIMS administration to hold proper inquiry of the incident.

Earlier this month, a doctor was attacked by family of a child who lost life on medical grounds. The PIMS administration had formed a committee to resolve the matter and control the incidents in future but the step remained unsuccessful.
