On the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day this year, the Ministry of Health banned consumer promotions on cigarette sales like free goods, cash rebates, free samples and discounts. This was one of the many initiatives undertaken by the MO Health to curtail tobacco consumption particularly among youth of the country. One wonders, though, where are these initiatives implemented, if at all? We make laws and policies but lag behind in their implementation. The government should work on better implementation of laws to save our youth from a health hazard like smoking. -SHEHREEN BANO, Lahore, via e-mail, July 15.
