WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States will temporarily expand the size of the US Army by adding up to 22,000 new troops to ease the strain of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Monday. On the recommendation of the Secretary of the Army Pete Geren and Chief of Staff of the Army General George Casey, and with President Obamas strong support, today I am announcing a decision to temporarily increase the active duty end strength of the Army by up to 22,000, Gates told reporters.
