Musharraf's aides foresee no future for his party

LAHORE Former president General (r) Pervez Musharrafs efforts to fulfil his political ambitions are dimming, as majority of his former colleagues do not foresee any political role of Musharraf in future, while they also oppose contacts of their partymen with him. However, some of them support him, visualising a vacuum in political sphere of the country, TheNation has learnt. Musharraf in a bid to accomplish his political plans met with his former colleagues in Dubai and asked them to muster support for him by persuading his old colleagues back home to assemble under one umbrella. However, many of his old colleagues in PML-Q, PML-Q (like-minded group) and other sidelined Muslim Leaguers not only opposed the contacts of their partymen with Musharraf but also disowned their meetings in Dubai by saying they would seek an explanation from all those who saw Musharraf in Dubai, informed insiders in the stated factions of Leagues quoting senior party leaders. Insiders in Musharrafs camp told this scribe from Dubai on Tuesday that former president met with several politicians belonging to PML-Q (like-minded group) and PML-Q including Raza Hayat Hiraj, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Ameer Muqam, Ch Shahbaz, Ishaq Khakwani, Raees Munir Ahmed, Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Lala Nisar Khan, Syed Charag-ud-Din, Hamid Nasir Chattha and Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, Dr Sher Afgan Niazi, Asjad Malhi, Maj-Gen (r) Rashid Qureshi and Dr Amjad Hussain besides former secretary election commission Kunwar Dilshad. Musharraf, it is stated also had talked to Pir of Pagaro on telephone to discuss the possibilities of his role in politics. Insiders claimed that Hamid Nasir Chattha, Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri and Pir of Pagaro told Musharraf that they foresee his role in countrys politics in the times to come. Chattha and Kasuri informed the former president about their efforts for formation of greater political alliance mainly based on Muslim Leaguers. They told him that the 'coalition in the making would be comprising 'Pro-Musharraf forces minus PML-N, asserted the insiders. It is to be mentioned here that three Muslim Leagues including PML (Zia), PML (Functional) and PML-Q (like-minded group) have formed an alliance and persuaded the sidelined Leaguers and other likeminded forces to join their ranks for forming a larger political alliance. However, Ejazul Haq, chief of PML (Zia), Saleem Saifullah and Humayun Akhtar Khan, president and secretary general of PML-Q (like-minded group) respectively as well as Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood, President PML (Functional) Punjab, in their Press statements have opposed the move for establishing any contacts with Musharraf, predicting that there is no future of former president in politics. Ch Shujaat Hussain, chief of PML-Q, also stated publicly that they had no concern with the 'political adventurism of Musharraf. Former prime minister, Mir Zafarullah Jamali who participated in the recent meeting of the three Muslim Leagues amalgam also opposed mainstream politicians contacts with Musharraf. However, the insiders claimed that the politicians who met Musharraf in Dubai told him that there was not a single political personality of international stature in the newly formed alliance of three Leagues and Musharraf was the only person who could lead the proposed coalition or the greater political alliance likely to be formed this year. Meanwhile, two-pronged strategy devised at the meeting deals with the announcement of Musharrafs vision for the country and party manifesto as well as his return, revealed the insiders. Musharraf would make public his vision and manifesto and the date for his return only after final efforts about the formation of greater political alliance, as he was solely banking on the support of the stated coalition. Quoting the participants of Dubai meeting, the insiders claim that the efforts to form a larger political alliance are likely to take a practical shape by the end of August, and after that, former president would announce his manifesto in the first phase and date for his return from London in the second.
