SAHIWAL - The Brick kiln owners Association took out a protest rally against levy of 16 per cent General Sales Tax (GST)on the sale of bricks. The rally was led by President Association Haji Pir Muhammad. The rally was started from Mal Mandi and marched through College Chowk, Sheikh Nisar Road and reached district courts. The participants were carrying placards and banners and were chanting slogans against the levy of the GST. Addressing the rally before the Commissioner Office, Haji Pir Muhammad demanded the government to withdraw the levy from the bricks. He said that if the sale tax was not withdrawn hundred of kiln workers would be rendered jobless and the price of bricks would soar exorbitantly. He said that if rates of bricks were increased continuously then brick kiln owners would not be able to continue their business. As a result, about 200 brick kiln would be closed and millions of people linked to the business would become jobless. He further said that majority of brick kiln owners, being illiterate were unable to maintain record of sales tax and sale tax department official will tease them on different pretexts.
