LAHORE - Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Wednesday said that revenge was not part of the agenda of Pakistan Peoples Party. Addressing a cheques distribution ceremony among the pensioners of National Press Trust at Alhamra Hall here, she said that her party was committed to resolving problems of all segments of society without any vengeance. She said system needed change of minds and attitude instead of faces. Firdous said it was the partys commitment and its leadership, vision of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, philosophy of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Shaheed and special interest of President Asif Ali Zardari that the problems of NPT employees had been resolved. Talking about the role of media, she said, Media has the power and ability to positively change the minds of people and it should always protect the interests of the state. She said that media was fulfilling its responsibility of correcting the governments but it should be kept in view that while criticising the government, the interests of the state were not damaged. Calling the media a fourth pillar of the state, she said media could bring about positive changes in the country. She urged the media to project the true image of Pakistan in the world. Congratulating the retired employees of NPT on resolution of their issue after 20 years, Firdous lauded the PPP leadership for its special interest in the issue and releasing the amount for the pensioners despite financial constraints. She said the PPP-led government was aware of the problems of people. The poor and middle class of the society was badly disturbed due to the power loadshedding but the PPP was not responsible for it. She said it was Benazir Bhutto Shaheed who had introduced IPPs (independent power producers) which were shut down later due to non-cooperation of the successive governments. The information minister said that it was against the manifesto of PPP to sack the employees and that it was its credit that it had provided jobs to the people. She directed the NPT Chairman to take an initiative for getting vacated NPT properties across the country from the grabbers and to make a strategy that the NPT employees might receive benefits from the initiative. She said the media would be further strengthened in future and the latest equipment for the media would be provided to it. She also announced on the occasion that government was contemplating to revive 'Daily Mashriq. Firdous said that as an additional responsibilities of culture, she would try to resolve the issues of the artist community, adding, Benazir Bhutto scholarships and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto scholarships would be announced for the artists so that they could lead their lives in better way. Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa said that media should utilise its powers for betterment of the state and guide the people and the government by using its abilities.
