Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan and also one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Its population has increased rapidly and accordingly has given rise to many problems of which water crisis has become the key issue
With the authorities unable to provide adequate water and with pumping stations, the dwellers of Karachi have been left to fend for themselves in the current water crisis. They are forced to turn towards the use of water tankers to meet their needs. While the Water Board suggests fluctuating electricity problems as the reason for insufficient supply, K-Electric has claimed that the electricity cables at the pumping stations are the actual reason for this. They have also stated that it is the water board’s responsibility to get these cables replaced so that the pumping stations can operate effectively.
No measure to improve the supply of filtered water has been adopted by the government. Problems due to improper drainage system are also becoming a matter of concern among the people. The alarming increase in the disorderliness of drainage lines is posing serious threats for people, especially the ones living in poorer areas. This is also creating way for the spread of many water borne diseases like malaria, cholera and dysentery. Well developed areas are also going through severe water issues which remain unsolved till now. In the end it is the general public who is suffering and there is no one to take responsibility for the prevailing water crunch.
