Nawaz offers to pay fines of poor inmates

RAWALPINDI  -  Deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif has asked the Adiala jail administration to provide a list of poor inmates languishing in jail due to the non-payment of their fines, sources said on Friday.

The sources further claimed that Sharif has also pledged to install a tube-well inside the jail to provide clean drinking water to the inmates.

The former premier, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar are detained in Adiala jail after an accountability court convicted them in the Avenfield reference.

According to the sources, the former prime minister has started charity work in the jail and asked the jail authorities to provide him the list of those inmates who were facing imprisonment due to the non-payment of fines imposed by courts.

They said that the water issue was brought to the notice of the former prime minister and he expressed his willingness to install a tube-well for the jail inmates from his own pocket.

Adiala Jail Superintendent Saeed Ullah Gondal was not available for comments despite repeated attempts to contact him
